Medical College – Stara Zagora was founded in 1947 as Institute for nurses. In the course of its long
history it changed its status and by a Decree №16 of 27.01.1997 of the Council of Ministers recently it
was trasformed to the Medical College in the structure of the Trakia University.
The College has facilities, creating optimal conditions for quality training of students in two established
and accredited specialties – "Rehabilitation therapist" and "Medical laboratory assistant". In 2013 it
reveals a new to the country accredited specialty "Geriatric Care".
Specialty "Rehabilitation therapist" for Professional Bachelor Degree is accredited specialty with a
capacity of 150 students.
Graduates receive a diploma of Professional Bachelor Degree with professional qualification
"Rehabilitation therapist".
Training is full time with duration of 3 years.
Semester fees: EUR 1,300 for foreing students.
The admission to the college for specialty "Rehabilitation therapist" is performed by passing a
competitive exam – test or written exam in Biology, or based on the assessment of the state
matriculation exams in Biology of the high school diploma.
After graduating the rehabilitation therapist works in a team with a clinician doctor, physiotherapist
and other medical staff by performing a volume of activities. They can find professional realization in
hospitals – the cabinets in physical therapy, massage and physiotherapy, in clinics and wards,
diagnostic and health centers, convalescent homes, hospital resorts and spa centers, in kindergartens
and schools, sports centers and etc.
Specialty "Medical laboratory assistant" for Professional Bachelor Degree is accredited specialty with
a capacity of 120 students.
Graduates receive a diploma of professional Bachelor Degree with professional qualification "Medical
laboratory assistant".
Training is full time with duration of 3 years.
Semester fee: EUR 1,300 for foreign students.
The admission to the college for specialty "Medical laboratory assistant" is performed by passing a
competitive exam – test or written exam in Biology, or based on the assessment of the state
matriculation exams in Biology of the high school diploma.
After graduation the medical laboratory assistant can find a professional realization in all kinds of
medical diagnostic or research laboratories – clinical, microbiological, histological, parasitological,
immunological and other specialized public or private laboratories.
Specialty "Geriatric care" for Professional Bachelor Degree is accredited specialty with a capacity of
60 specialty students.
Graduates receive a diploma of Professional Bachelor Degree with professional qualification
"Geriatric specialist".
Training is full time with duration of 3 years.
Semester fees: EUR 1,300 for foreign students.
The admission is based on the assessment of the state matriculation exams in Biology or Bulgarian
language and Literature of the high school diploma; written exam or test in Biology, or exam in General
language skills.
After graduating the geriatric specialist can work in homes for elderly people, home social patronage
care, day care centers for elderly people, geriatric units in the hospital and outpatient care, institutions
working with elderly people with severe illnesses, disabilities and dementia, institutions providing care
for elderly people at home, rehabilitation centers, hospices, other geriatric-oriented units and freelance
work in the country and abroad.
